The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum is the last 19th-century estate within the Bronx’s Pelham Bay. This cultural and educational institution serves the New York City community by preserving and maintaining the mansion and carriage house, the collection within the museum and the gardens and surrounding landscape. Students, adults and families can learn a lot about the historic site through the innovative and dynamic educational and public programming offered there. The history and ownership of this land can be traced back to circa 1000 A.D., when it was inhabited by the Lenape Native American tribe. In 1654, physician Thomas Pell of Connecticut acquired 50,000 acres of land from the Lenape through a treaty. Robert Bartow, a descendant of Pell, bought a portion of the land in 1836. The mansion was then completed in 1842. Since 1946, the building has operated as a museum.
