Much of the fanfare surrounding New York City-based film studios is centered around annual film festivals held in the other boroughs, such as Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. However, there are plenty of Bronx film festivals that take place each year, with the Bronx Independent Film Festival standing out among them. In addition, the Bronx International Film Festival was established to honor the Bronx’s long history of filmmaking, dating back to the early 20th century. At the time, the borough was home to the film studios Edison Studios, Terrytoons at 2826 Decatur Ave. and Biograph Studios at 807 E. 175th St. Another noteworthy studio in the Bronx, Gold Medal Studios, made several popular movies, including the 1960 film “Butterfield 8,” starring Elizabeth Taylor, and the 1957 film “A Face in the Crowd,” starring Andy Griffith.

When it comes to film festivals, the Bronx can often feel like it’s left out of the equation — that is far from true for the Mott Haven Film Festival. Founded by Mott Haven resident Ninoska Carolina, the festival is here to raise up the South Bronx community and show that the neighborhood is a force to be reckoned with in the short film space. Each year, the Mott Haven Film Festival recognizes short films from filmmakers from all over the world and come together in the Bronx to show off which films that blend into the melting pot that is the Bronx. The festival accepts submissions from a number of genres, including Experimental, Documentaries, Comedy, Drama, and student films, so you never know what you’ll find in each festival!
